Okay, so a trip to Delaware might sound random. After all, it is known as the "drive through state." Why not stay the night and see what there is to explore? As an alum of the University of Delaware, I learned a lot about all that Delaware has to offer. Here's a bit of information from my recent trip back!
On my first night there, my mom and I went to Main St. in Newark. This is the cutest college town in the world and it has so many different restaurants to fit everyone's needs. There's Chipotle, Newark Deli & Bagel (closest to a NY bagel you can get), tons of Irish bars and restaurants and of course, Insomnia Cookies for those late night study sessions. For dinner, my mom and I hit up Homegrown, our favorite restaurant on Main St. They make almost everything on their menu available as vegan or vegetarian upon request and they have live music almost every night. My dinner was Korean Cauliflower Wings, Pan Seared Tilapia and Avocado Creme Brulée... Like, what?! This place is so creative and you never have to feel bad about what you just ate, unless of course you get their hug pot of fries or plate of nachos (definitely worth it). They change up their menu seasonally too, so there's always something new to try!
Okay, if you're in Newark, you need to stop by the UD Creamery, located right next to the University of Delaware's Football Stadium. UD makes their own ice cream and it is life changing. They have all of the traditional flavors like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, but you need to try their signature flavors like Cinnamon Toast Crunchie, Mango Basil, Banana Coconut Cream Pie and Midnight Blackberry Cheesecake. Did I mention the UD Creamery ice cream truck that drives around campus? Yeah, that happens.
If you're in Delaware over the summer, you need to check out Rehoboth Beach. There is a huge boardwalk with tons of shops, restaurants and arcades. Oh, and Thrasher's fries. That is a must. If you're a beer lover, definitely check out Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats, a restaurant right by the beach that brews Dogfish Head beer on the premises. Not a fan of beer? Don't worry, they also have awesome cocktails and flavored shots! This is a great place to eat, drink and relax after a long day on the beach.
So what are you waiting for? There's so much to do in Delaware and it's just a short ride from cities like New York and Philly. Enjoy!
